THE FIRST OBJECTIVE OF THE "DATA FOR REFUGEES TURKEY” CHALLENGE IS TO PROVIDE A LARGE DATASET OF ANONYMIZED MOBILE PHONE USAGE TO RESEARCHER GROUPS FOR THE PURPOSES OF PROVIDING BETTER LIVING CONDITIONS TO MORE THAN 3.5 MILLION SYRIAN REFUGEES IN TURKEY.

3.5M REFUGEES IN
TURKEY

THE CHALLENGE FOCUSES ON FIVE PRIORITIZED SUBJECT AREAS AND INVITES RESEARCHERS TO CREATE SOLUTIONS ON:

  • SAFETY & SECURITY
  • HEALTH
  • EDUCATION
  • UNEMPLOYMENT
  • SOCIAL INTEGRATION

For each of these main themes, specific prizes will be awarded, although the challenge is not restricted to these areas, and other themes (e.g. gender issues, housing, black markets, etc.). A key objective is to implement practical solutions jointly with the stakeholders, ultimately to benefit the refugee population in Turkey, and set examples for using big data for refugee problems. Project reports will be public or privately shared with a few stakeholders, depending on the assessment of the ethics committee.

Any reported research that may potentially cause harm to the refugee population because of its sensitive content will only be shared with relevant government units and NGOs. Additional to the prizes related to the focus themes, the challenge offers one Research Prize to the project that proposes the most innovative and novel advance in Big Data analysis, and one Impact Prize, given to the project with the highest potential for having a significant impact on the well-being of the refugee population.

Project reports will be shared with relevant government agencies and NGOs to support the refugees' problems. A white paper will be prepared by TÜBITAK and Boğaziçi University.
